Quality Assurance programme for cervical cancer screening in Halkidiki
Initiated in 1992, as a pilot project addressing the female population of the region aged 20-70 years to undergo cytological and gynaecological examination at the Centre"Our Lady Who LovesMankind"in Ormylia, Halkidiki. The target population was 25,000 (in 1991) and all women were personally invited to have a smear (PAP) test annually by experienced gynaecologists. The programme was greeted with great enthusiasm and has expanded to the neighbouring regions. . Informative lectures on the risk and preventive strategies of cervical cancer were presented to groups of women prior to the cytological examination and interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect vital demographic, socio-economic and medical history information. The screening programme is a model unit of secondary prevention in Greece and a member of the European Network for Quality Assurance in Cervical Cancer Screening (European Commission, Public Health Directorate).
