Program on Food Aid and Nutrition Education – DIATROFI: Implemented in Remote and Rural Areas
Prolepsis Institute implemented the project Program on Food Aid and Nutrition Education – DIATROFI: Implemented in Remote and Rural Areas (for the 2014 – 2015 and September – January 2015 – 2016 School Years).
Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway funded the program though the We are all Citizens Program, which is part of the EEA Grants mechanism for Greece. The financial coordinator for this program was the Bodosakis Foundation. The aim of the Program was the bolstering of society and its citizens in our country and the reinforcement of social justice, democracy and that of sustainable development.
The core objective of Diatrofi is the reduction of food insecurity on a day-to-day basis for students who attend public schools in remote and rural areas; the children that have been impacted most from the economic crisis. In tandem, and just as important to the program is the development of healthy lifestyles for students and their families through the promotion of good dietary habits.
At its beginning in December 2014, the gradual introduction of 13 elementary schools consisting of 1,115 students were inducted in the program within the areas of Xanthi, Imathia, Pierias, Thessaloniki and Rodopi. All participating students were provided on a daily basis with one free, healthy meal while simultaneously being educated on matters of health, nutrition and proper dietary habits using informative materials that were specifically targeted to the students and their families.
The Program on Food Aid and Healthy Nutrition – DIATROFI was implemented on the initiative of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, who is also the founding donor and in cooperation with the Prolepsis Institute. Established in 2012, the program has been operational for four consecutive school years with the additional support of several other donors, in public schools that are situated in underprivileged areas of the country. The Program is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs.
