European Union School program: Educating students about healthy eating

Within the context of the E.U. School Fruit, Vegetables and Milk Scheme, Prolepsis Institute, participating as a co-partner, implemented the educational activities aspect of the program with a view to educating students and encouraging them to adopt healthy eating habits.

The program is co-funded by the European Union and implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

Almost 15,000 students from 822 primary schools in Attica, Thessaloniki, Patras and Crete attended the lectures carried out by Prolepsis Institute entitled "Learning about fruits, vegetables and milk". Overall, 3,163 lectures were held from May 2019 to the end of the school year 2019.

These lectures constitute an educational measure within the context of this program, which is based on 3 keystones: direct provision of fruits, vegetables and milk to children in schools, education on adopting healthy eating habits, on agriculture and livestock farming and communication of the program to target groups such as children, parents and teachers. Prolepsis institute implemented the project in partnership with GEFSINOUS SA company, which undertook the educational measure “Live demonstration of cooking in schools”.

The lectures consisted of presentations by nutritionists who demonstrated to students the nutritional value of fruits, vegetables, milk and dairy products and informed them about the principles of healthy nutrition and the health benefits of physical activity. The educational activities comprised both the use of audiovisual material, and the demonstration of actual fruits and vegetables to children. The scientific content of the presentations was developed by Prolepsis Institute and their implementation in schools was carried out by 73 collaborating dieticians – nutritionists, who have been selected and trained by the Institute.
