CANCERLESS
CANCERLESS: For the early detection of cancer in the homeless.
Prolepsis is a partner in a new European Horizon 2020 project entitled “Cancer prevention and early detection among the homeless population in Europe: Co-adapting and implementing the Health Navigator Model program – The CANCERLESS project”. The project was officially launched on June 1st 2021 and it will last for three years. The CANCERLESS project is coordinated by the Medical University of Vienna while it includes partner organizations with long-standing experience in the field of health and social care for homeless people in Europe, as well as various academic institutions and local governments.
Approximately one in three deaths among homeless individuals comes from non-communicable diseases, with cancer being the second most common cause of mortality. Cancer mortality in this group is twice as high as in the general adult population in high-income countries, indicating a major gap in the health care system for this target group.
CANCERLESS’ vision is to reduce the burden of cancer, which in turn will benefit all health and social networking systems in Europe, considering the social determinants of health.
Hence, the aim of the CANCERLESS project is to provide innovative solutions that combine navigation and patient education models to create a new integrated model: the Health Navigator model for Europe.
This well-documented patient-centered intervention is expected to empower patients by providing health education and social support and encourage them to have early access to primary and secondary prevention programs.
The Health Navigator Model will be co-created with the project target group and it will be pilot tested in four settings i.e. London, Madrid, Athens and Vienna and in 1,500 homeless people.
The CANCERLESS intervention is to provide recommendations for integrated disease care routes in Europe, allowing for early diagnoses in the homeless population, delivering patient-centered interventions to overcome health inequalities and facilitating timely access to quality cancer prevention and screening services for this vulnerable group.
The CANCERLESS consortium consists of more than 11 organizations from 6 European countries: Austria, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Belgium.
