ASSET – Action plan in Science in Society in Epidemics and Total pandemics
The Prolepsis Institute is taking part as a partner in a new European project called ASSET (Action plan in Science in Society in Epidemics and Total pandemics). ASSET started in January 2014, it is a four-year project and is implemented under the 7th Framework Programme of EU Research (FP7). Istituto Superiore di Sanità from Italy is responsible for the scientific coordination the project while the French consulting company, VITAMIB, is the Project Coordinator. Another 15 scientific institutions are also taking part in the project from Europe and the School of Public Health at the University of Haifa in Israel is also involved.
ASSETS aims to:
- Start a cooperation with scientific institutions, that offer additional knowledge, perspective and experiences in order to effectively address scientific and social challenges raised during a pandemic and to be trained accordingly in Crisis Management.
- Explore and map the issues in regards to the relationship between scienceandsociety(Science in Society) during a pandemic.
- Establish and test an integratedstrategywith evidence of successful implementation.
- Identify the necessary resources in order to ensurethesustainabilityof the actionafterthe completionof the project.
ASSET is a program that combines public health, vaccination and epidemiological research, social and political science, law and ethics, gender studies, science communication and media in order to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary strategy, which will be implemented in various stages of the research. It seeks to integratethe relationship between 'Science and Society' (i.e. public participation, ethics, science education, communication, access to anddissemination of scientific information) in research and innovation systems associated with periods of a pandemic.
Furthermore, ASSET is in line with the goals of "Horizon 2020", and the SocialChallenge: Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing Programme-EU Framework for Research and Innovation 2014-2020. Specifically aimed at ensuring a high level of protection of human health, effective prevention, treatment, and management of disease outbreaks and emerging access to an effective and efficient health system.
