The Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition Program starts today
The distribution of healthy meals to 12,400 students in 83 schools in Athens, Thessaloniki, Imathia and Patras, started today within the framework of the Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition Program.
The Prolepsis Institute, with a grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, will continue to implement the Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition Program for the 2013-2014 school year. The program aims to respond to the nutritional needs of 50000 students in over 300 public schools in socioeconomically vulnerable areas affected by the economic crisis throughout Greece.
All students in participating schools receive a daily, healthy meal, free of charge, specially designed to meet their nutritional needs. Current meal offerings include whole-wheat tomato and cheese sandwiches as well as a carton of milk and a piece of fresh fruit.
A more detailed, weekly menu is attached.
Moreover, the Program will work towards reinforcing healthy nutrition and promoting the health of both students and their families. It will do so by employing specially designed materials, including text messages and tips on healthy nutrition, as well as educational events and activities for parents and children alike.
