Series of events for the promotion of healthy nutrition
The parents of the students, who participate in the Program on Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition, will have the opportunity to listen to tips on healthy nutrition, learn culinary secrets and watch a chef cook for them.
More specifically, information sessions will be organized for the parents of students who participate in the Program on Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition. The program targets elementary and secondary school students of underprivileged areas, and is implemented by the Institute of Preventive Medicine Environmental and Occupational Medicine, Prolepsis, with the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The events begin on the 20th of March and will continue until the 15th of May 2013. The aim of the events is to promote healthy nutrition for both students and their families.
A nutritionist and a health promotion specialist from the Prolepsis scientific team, will talk about the importance of healthy nutrition, analyze what healthy nutrition should include, especially for children and adolescents, and present tips on healthy nutrition. Particular emphasis will be given to the presentation of healthier ways of cooking but also to safety in handling food-and to purchasing, maintenance, storage, and preparation of food. The role of parents in shaping children's eating habits will be also emphasized. Moreover, the team will present practical techniques to change unhealthy eating habits and underline the importance of daily physical activity for children. Finally, financial advice on how to best deal with food costs will be given and economical but also healthy food choices will be presented to parents.
In parallel, as an effort to turn health eating advice into action, the event will include a cooking session. A guest chef will demonstrate, before parents, a healthy and economical recipe. Parents will, thus, have the opportunity to closely follow all the steps of preparing a healthy recipe, which will allow them to cook for themselves and their children at home.
