Promoting occupational health and safety for Municipal Urban Cleaners (MUCs)

January 10, 2024

The MUC-Training for Health programme has designed important educational tools to increase knowledge for Municipal Urban Cleaners. Educational material has been prepared after considering the needs and views of MUCs, following focus groups in all countries of the joint venture.

2 Municipalities and 3 research organizations from 4 European countries participate in this project. The Greek participants are the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (project coordinator) and Prolepsis Institute.

This project aims to fill the gap in the training of MUCs and contribute to the occupational hygiene and safety conditions.

Through an online training platform, MUC-Training for Health trains employees to recognize occupational hazards and health risks ahead of time. It includes six training modules, regarding: protection measures, first aid, health literacy, promotion of health, mental health issues, and awareness and communication issues.

With the support of the Municipality of Athens, educational videos have been created for MUCs, which contain examples of best and worst practices. The videos are also available in Greek, both on the online training platform and on the programme’s YouTube channel.

The joint venture of the programme has designed a Guide for instructors in professional education and training and for academic institutions. This Guide consists of the research data that the educational material was based on, as well as related instructions on the incorporation of the training modules in educational curriculums for the professional training of MUCs, and, more specifically, occupational health and safety issues.

The educational material is available online for free, through the programme’s online platform.

This project is funded by the ERASMUS+ programme of the European Union. The other project participants consist of the Center for Social Innovation LTD (Cyprus), the Comune di Andrano (Italy), and the Varna Economic Development Agency (Bulgaria).
