Successful open lecture entitled “Cancer: Strategies and Priorities for Prevention”

The open lecture entitled "Cancer: Strategies and Priorities for Prevention" organized by Prolepsis with the kind support of Novartis Oncology took place on September 6th, at Aegli Zappiou. The event was characterized as very successful. A large audience attended the lecture of Dr Graham Colditz, Niess-Gain Professor in the School of Medicine and Associate Director Prevention and Control, Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, Washington University School of Medicine. The lecture also attracted great interest from the Greek Mass Media, through coverage during prime time TV news and articles in high- circulation newspapers.
According to Dr Colditz, the development of strategies for the prevention of cancer is a great challenge for both society and the state. These strategies should be based both on institutional changes such as smoking prohibition in public areas or measures for the reduction of environmental pollution and on the continuous provision of information to the public for the promotion of a healthier lifestyle such as avoiding tobacco use, limiting alcohol consumption, increasing physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight and diet, avoiding excess sun exposure and utilizing safer sex practices.
This lecture constitutes the first of a series of lectures regarding Public Health issues as Prolepsis tries to inform and sensitize the Greek public.
