Prevention and early diagnosis of cancer in the population of homeless in Europe: its pilot application CANCERLESS program
June 22, 2023
Approximately one in three deaths of people experiencing homelessness are due to causes that can be overcome, with cancer being the second most common cause of death. Cancer mortality among the homeless population in high-income countries is twice as high compared to the general population.
Currently, the CANCERLESS project is being piloted in the following countries: Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki), Austria, Spain and the United Kingdom. The purpose of the CANCERLESS program is to support the population of homeless people by providing better access to health care systems, supporting the prevention and early diagnosis of cancer and promoting public health actions ( access to sports facilities, nutrition seminars, smoking cessation sessions, etc.).
The plan for the pilot application of CANCERLESS in all countries is under the supervision of the Prolepsis Institute scientific team. Also, the non-profit organization PRAKSIS is responsible for the implementation of the program in Greece.
