Presentation of the National Dietary Guideline for people aged 65 and over during the 13th National Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics
On February 26-28 the 13th National Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics was held with the theme "Challenges in the care of elderly people in Greece under crisis”. Interesting issues were discussed regarding the advances in the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of diseases concerning ageing, the exciting developments in diseases of the body, the improvement in quality of life of elderly people and the efforts of scientific research to promote anti-aging. Furthermore the National Dietary Guideline for people aged 65 and over has been presented. The National Dietary Guidelines have been developed by the scientific team of the Prolepsis Institute in cooperation with specialists and University professors, including the Medical School of the University of Athens and of the University of Crete, Harokopio University and the Agricultural University of Athens. Ms. Katerina Belogianni, dietitian and member of the scientific team of the National Dietary Guidelines, briefly stated the methodology of their development and some dietary recommendations for the elderly.
The National Dietary Guideline for people aged 65 and over has been developed with a view to contribute to health promotion in the corresponding age group, by making the most of the Greek nutritional tradition through modern scientific knowledge. In addition, the National Dietary Guideline focuses on social and economic issues and is certainly a useful guide to all readers.
