Aurora was coordinated by the Italian institute OSSERVATORIO NAZIONALE SULLA SALUTE DELLA DONNA &ndash; ASSOCIAZIONE with the participation of 13 other associate partners including Prolepsis.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe main objective of the project was the development and dissemination of innovative strategies for the prevention of cervical cancer. The main target group were women as well as health professionals working in the area of cancer prevention, women&rsquo;s associations etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThousands of women in Europe are affected by cervical cancer each year even though this type of cancer is considered preventable through the use of the Papanicolaou test and through vaccinations against certain types of the HPV virus. Nevertheless, each year 33.000 women in the EU develop cervical cancer and 15.000 die. Countries with a population based organized screening program have lower rates of cervical cancer compared to countries that do not.
