EU<\/strong>–<\/strong>MiCare<\/strong> Programme: <\/strong>Training the EU Health Workforce to Improve Migrant and Refugee Mental Health Crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Prolepsis Institute takes part as a partner in the EU-MiCare programme for the training of the EU Health Workforce to Improve Migrant and Refugee Mental Health Crisis. The programme is carried out within the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme of the European Union to train the EU Health Workforce to Improve Migrant and Refugee Mental Health Crisis. The programme started on September 1st<\/sup>\u00a0 2022 and will be completed within 3 years.<\/p>\n

The project will be carried out in collaboration with 6 partners from 5 European countries (Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Spain and Germany) and is coordinated by Ethno-Medizinisches Zentrum Ev in Germany.<\/p>\n

As migrant and refugee flows continue to Europe \u2013 the recent Ukrainian conflict greatly contributing to this increase – mental health issues will become a huge matter not only for migrants themselves but also for host communities and health services of transit and final destination countries. Migrants and refugees coming to Europe have often experienced traumatic events such as war and forced displacement, violence and torture, physical danger, financial hardship, uncertainty about their future or prolonged stay in transit countries until their asylum applications are processed (Zimmerman et al., 2011). It is evident that all these migrant\/refugee experiences are associated with many negative consequences, which can result in adverse mental health outcomes when not supported or addressed adequately (Salami et al., 2018).<\/p>\n

Eu-MiCare\u2019s main objective <\/strong>is to develop a cutting-edge, inclusive training program for professionals working with immigrants and refugees. The programme\u2019s primary objectives are to enhance professional ability to address the mental health needs of vulnerable migrant and refugee populations, as well as enhance partner capabilities to develop and deliver appropriate training to health professionals working with migrant\/refugees experiencing psychological discomfort. Moreover, it aims to raise awareness among relevant professional communities and organisations and to increase the public\u2019s awareness of the value of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration. It also aims to increase possibilities of health professionals who work with migrants and refugees to benefit from the Erasmus+ program. Lastly, it intends to promote awareness among immigrants and refugees, encouraging them to identify mental health issues and seek assistance.<\/p>\n

The expected outcomes<\/strong> include a thorough training program for health professionals working with migrants and refugees, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, physicians, nurses, and other professionals such as cultural mediators, interpreters, and counsellors. This program will be made available online and will be based on the opinions of the target groups as gathered through co-creation activities in the partner countries.<\/p>\n
