Co-CAPTAIN

Prolepsis Institute participates as a partner in the Co-CAPTAIN research project implemented under the EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation “Horizon Europe 2022”, entitled “Cancer prevention among individuals with mental ill-health: Co-adapting and Implementing Patient Navigation for primary cancer prevention”. The project started on June 1, 2023 and has a three-year duration.  The Co-CAPTAIN project is coordinated by the Medical University of Vienna and involves partners with long-standing experience in the field of health and social care for people with mental illness in southern, eastern, northwestern and central Europe, as well as academic institutions and local governments.

Cancer and mental illness are major public health concerns in Europe, with data indicating that more than 80 million people experience mental health problems and around 4 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed annually. People with mental disorders have higher mortality and incidence of cancer, which is attributed to risky health behaviors as well as the significant barriers they face when accessing highly fragmented healthcare systems. Timely and evidence-based preventive strategies, including optimizing access to healthcare, can be a solution to reduce cancer morbidity and could improve overall health outcomes in this vulnerable population.

The Co-CAPTAIN project aims to reduce health inequalities for people with mental illness by reducing the burden of cancer and improving overall health, which in turn will reduce related costs across health and social care systems in Europe. In addition, it aims to provide recommendations for health and social care policy for the adoption and implementation of the Patient Navigation Model across Europe. The Patient Navigation Model is a patient-centered intervention that supports patient empowerment by removing systemic barriers, providing social support and promoting timely access to primary health care and prevention services.

The Co-CAPTAIN partnership consists of 14 organizations from 6 European countries, including Austria, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland and Belgium.
