Briefing of the Parliamentary Subcommittee on Water Resources for Hexavalent chromium in drinking water by Professor Athena Linos

March 24th, 2016

On March 23rd Mrs. Athena Linos, Professor and Chair of Dept. of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics of Athens Medical School and Head of the Epidemiological study conducted in Oinofita, informed the Subcommittee on Water Resources of the Special Permanent Committee on Environmental Protection on Hexavalent chromium in drinking water.

The Epidemiological study in the area of Oinofita focuses on the consumption of drinking water by local residents until 2009. The study contains retrospective mortality studies and measurement of causes of death, cell niches examination in order to examine the association between the exposure to possible forms of pollution to cause-specific mortality, population-based morbidity study by disease category and a pulmonary function test in children.

The results of the study have a significant impact on the scientific community and have been used, as evidence inter alia in California Government explanatory memorandum (2011) establishing a limit of hexavalent chromium content in drinking water (Public Health Goals).
