Educational campaign for the rural population against avian influenza
Informing rural populations about guidelines against avian influenza is the aim of the campaign launched by the Institute of Preventive Medicine, Environmental and Occupational Health, and sponsored by the Agricultural Bank of Greece.
Taking into consideration both the primary role of farmers and their families in protecting public health and the importance of providing them with information in order to eliminate the possibility of an epidemic, the Institute's staff and public health experts visit rural areas in Greece informing local populations and authorities about avian influenza. Moreover, leaflets, specially designed by the famous Greek artist Stathis, and questionnaires for the evaluation of the educational material, are being distributed.
The informative material being used for this effort was developed as the final product of the European research program titled "ECORAIP - European Content for Public Health Awareness of Rural Population on Avian Influenza Prevention". "ECORAIP" highlighted the characteristics of rural life that may constitute a high risk factor in spreading the avian influenza virus in humans.
Until recently, events have been held in the municipalities of Vouprasia in Ileia, Pamisos in Karditsa, Asterousia in Irakleio-Crete, Levidion and Tegea in Arcadia, Kilkis, Kozani and Chalkidiki.
