European Commission: Public Health Program 2008-2013
Prolepsis participates as an associate partner in a new European project concerning the prevention of cervical cancer which began on the 1st of December 2010.
This 3-year project is titled “A European network on cervical cancer surveillance and control in the new Member States – AURORA” and is implemented within the framework of the Health Program 2008-2013 of DG SANCO. Aurora is coordinated by the Italian institute OSSERVATORIO NAZIONALE SULLA SALUTE DELLA DONNA – ASSOCIAZIONE with the participation of 15 other associate partners including Prolepsis.
The main objective of the project is the development and dissemination of innovative strategies for the prevention of cervical cancer. The main target group are women as well as health professionals working in the area of cancer prevention, women’s associations etc.
Thousands of women in Europe are affected by cervical cancer each year even though this type of cancer is considered preventable through the use of the Papanicolaou test and through vaccinations against certain types of the HPV virus. Nevertheless, each year 33.000 women in the EU develop cervical cancer and 15.000 die. Countries with a population based organized screening program have lower rates of cervical cancer compared to countries that do not. New MS have higher cervical cancer rates compared to the EU 15.
More specifically within the project the following will be achieved:
• Creation of a network of European centres for the cervical cancer prevention
• Pilot testing of the methodologies developed for prevention of cervical cancer through a campaign
• Cervical cancer prevention seminars for specialists (train the trainers)
• Development of an electronic information platform
